Initial BB

They say Visconti or Rossellini could have pulled the thing off;and indeed ,"tradita" looks like a poor man's "Vanina Vanini" or "Senso" .Directed by Mario Bonnard,it looks like Harlequin romance. The occupation of Italy by Austria circa 1915 provides the screenwriters with a pretext to show mawkish love stories , revenge and lots of betrayals. The well-known story of the two brothers ,one is Abel (he fights for his homeland),the other Cain (he befriends the nasty Austrians)is given such an incredible treatment you won't take it seriously one single minute :the final unexpected twist defies common sense.

Two French actors were part of the cast:Pierre Cressoy fell into oblivion, but the other was none other than Brigitte Bardot:who could have believed ,by looking at her as a virtuous good girl , that she would become two years later France's greatest sex symbol of all time? In French ,BB is dubbed (one can wonder why)by the same silly voice which also dubbed Romy Schneider in the French version of her early films ("Sissi","Christine").

Review :

Excellent version of Mickey Spillane's book.

Mickey Spillane was far better than what people use to give him credit for. His tough guys and sexy, deadly women gave a new life to the private eye novels of the fifties. This is a surprisingly good, forgotten film directed by Victor Saville, who also directed the famous flop "The Silver Chalice". Also a top cinematographer Franz Planer. The story is about Johnny McBride (Anthony Quinn), a man that lost his memory and also his fingerprints. McBride was involved in stealing 250000 dollars from a bank, together with a woman named Vera, who changed her looks and name. There are two remarkable moments in the film, first when the gangster Servo (Gene Evans) has all four women suspected of being Vera together, and then when the beautiful Venus (Peggy Castle) with long blond hair, tied up, drags herself to kiss McBride. Spillane's characters belong to a fantasy pulp, world and there resides their charm.

Edward Beale is in charge of finding a shorter trail across the American desert and to also test the practicality of using camels in the west in this 3-D western. (An actual test once conducted in the Big Bend area of Texas.) Clint MacDoanld, a bank robber one jump ahead of a posse, joins the caravan by posing as a doctor. His sweetheart, Lilly, also comes along and signs on. There is a whole lot of footage of the grueling trek across the desert, but it begins to move when mule-skinner Matt Carroll becomes aware of MacDonald's true profession and he wants the gold from the bank robbery. The Apaches have shied away from attacking the train, because of their fear of the camels, but a camel dies and the jig is up as they lose their fear and here they come.

average western with above average screenplay

Average western originally made in 3D where Rod Cameron is leading a caravan that among horses and mules, also uses camels. They are joined by outlaw John Ireland who poses as a doctor and his girlfriend, Joanne Dru. Dru and Ireland are the real stars of the film, their relationship gets into a crisis because of Dru's admiration of Cameron. Ireland convinces them that he is a doctor up to the point where he has to amputate a man's arm. They are followed by Native Americans that at the beginning believe the camels are gods, and don't attack. The story, by Harry Essex, who wrote such good screenplays as "The Lonely Man" and "The Sons off Katie Elder" deserved a better treatment.

Nanard

"Nanard" is French for "abysmal dud"

Jean Boyer made estimable comedies when Fernandel was at hand:"Senechal Le Magnifique" and "Le Couturier De Ces Dames" ;when he could recruit Michel Simon and Arletty (" Circonstances Attenuantes" ) it was a delight.

Maurice Chevalier is absolutely unbearable as an old beau who wants to be still young ("tomorrow I'm 20" is one of his repetitive songs) .Only ham can describe his work;the same can apply to the seven girls who pass for his illegitimate daughters (?),for his son (played by stage and TV actor Louis Velle),who is more interested in insects than in women ,for the servant (an abominable Paolo Stoppa);as though it were not enough ,there is also an entomologist who resembles Hergé's Professeur Tournesol (Pr Calculus).

The subject of old age getting closer had already been tackled by Sacha Guitry ,but Jean Boyer is not Sacha Guitry,by a long shot.

unusual, enjoyable, entertaining movie

"Riding Shotgun" is a very entertaining western, were only they all so good. It boasts an unusual story and pacing: 80 percent of the movie takes place between a bloody stagecoach robbery in the beginning of the movie and a violent casino robbery at the conclusion of the movie. During this 80 percent middle period, Scott is alone in town trying to convince the elders to recall the sheriff and posse which have gone after the stage robbers, who Scott knows robbed the stage to draw the sheriff-posse out of town so they could more easily rob the casino. And the townsfolk think Scott is part of the gang of stage robbers and wants the sheriff-posse recalled to protect the gang. So what we have is this intriguing story, rugged handsome Scott, good color photography, some humor supplied mainly by deputy sheriff Wayne Morris and cantina-owner Fritz Feld, an interesting/wacky group of townsfolk (in varied dress, looks and demeanor ), beautiful Joan Weldon, and Scott's narration. Unfortunately the ending doesn't live up to the delicious intro, but the ride was most enjoyable. And nice fade-out.

Review :

Judy Holliday should happen to anybody

The Garson Kanin screenplay isn't out of his top drawer, but it has a cute idea at the heart of it, one that has become more timely with the passing years: Celebrity can be bought. Judy Holliday plays a nobody who wants to be a somebody, and with the help of a cynical agent and a clever marketing ploy, she becomes one. Indeed, with the media machine grown so disproportionately huge since, this movie cries out for a remake. But who could ever match Holliday's musical, clinically precise line readings, or her wide-eyed facial expressions? There really is only one of her.

Jack Lemmon, in his movie debut, is likeable and accomplished, and some amusing faces turn up in supporting and cameo roles -- Constance Bennett, Ilka Chase, Peter Lawford. There's some gritty New York location filming, approximately where Lincoln Center is now (and where "West Side Story" was shot years later), adding to the verite motif in the subplot (Lemmon plays a documentary filmmaker).

With Cukor's sure direction, everybody seems to be having a wonderful time. So will you.

Yet More Stock Footage with a Little Jim Thrown In

Jungle Man-Eaters (1954)

* 1/2 (out of 4)

This was the thirteenth and final film in the Jungle Jim series, although three more films would follow but the Jungle Jim name would be dropped. This time out Jim (Johnny Weissmuller) must try and locate some diamond smugglers who are using an evil jungle tribe to scare off the good tribes in the jungle. Soon Jim is fighting men, lions, crocs and various other beasts while trying to impress a girl (Karin Booth). Like so many of these old series, I'm having to watch this one out of order but I've seen enough to realize all the negative things I've heard are pretty much try. It's rather amazing to see how much stock footage and cheese is throughout this thing and I really have to wonder if the studio checked to see how much stock footage they had and then just built a story around it. As bad as this film is I can't help but almost recommend it simply due to its campy nature and at times god-awful acting. God bless Weissmuller but it's clear he wasn't any type of actor outside the Tarzan image. His line delivery here is pretty bad but then again I'll give him credit because it's actually better than some of the earlier films in the series. He was also getting up their in age and there are times where it seems like he's in pain trying to (slowly) run yet we're suppose to believe he has the strength to fight a wild lion or a crocodile. Speaking of the lion scene, we're treated to quite a bit of stock footage including some with the lion fighting a bull and getting knocked around pretty badly. This is some rather interesting footage and I'm sure it's not going to sit well with some viewers. When Jim finally gets to fight this same lion thankfully he's turned into a fake rug by then. Supporting players Booth, Richard Wyler and Bernie Hamilton aren't much better as they zip in and out of stock footage and poorly added scenes trying to fit in with it. Just check out the sequence where one of the villages are burned and we see footage of various animals trying to escape the smoke. The fake smoke added to the stock footage just shows how cheap this movie and series was. Again, this is an incredibly poorly made film but it remains mildly charming simply because of the camp value. This is third-rate material all the way but producer Sam Katzman probably laughed his way to the bank.

Review :

Before Agnès Varda, there was Jacqueline Audry.

...Probably the first important woman director France has ever known.Male chauvinism:her movies are very rarely broadcast on TV and her name is slowly fading.

She often adapted Colette's works for the screen, but here, she tackles Jean-Paul Sartre ,no less! It's the philosopher's most famous drama (with its immortal sentence :"l'enfer,c'est les autres" (= Hell is

other people).Audry had to cope with problems inherent to any adaptation of a play:she succeeded quite good by using flashbacks -like Mankiewicz would do for "suddenly last summer"-,and inventing a very brilliant first scene:Alan Parker might have seen the movie, because he uses the elevator in "Angel heart" (1987)the same way Audry did in 1954.

Most of all, she's got three convincing actors, two of whom are unfortunately forgotten today (Gaby Sylvia was essentially a stage actress and Frank Villard was cast against type here:he was the tough male raider type:but convincing anyway). The third one is none other than the great Arletty:after "les enfants du paradis",like so many others who "collaborated" during the occupation -her only sin was to fall in love with a German:she said afterwards "My heart is French, but my a.. is international!"-she was blacklisted and when she could return, she was relegated to small parts -but she triumphed on the stage notably with Blanche's part in "streetcar named desire"-."Huis clos" is one of her rare leading parts after the war.She outdoes herself here ,playing lesbian Inès so intensely she's almost frightening and threatening. As historian Jean Tulard said "she was our best actress"

"Huis clos" is really interesting and will reward you if you give it a chance.Three people (alive or dead no matter)tearing each others to pieces.

If you like it,try "les jeux sont faits" another Sartre adaptation by Jean Delannoy

The Weak and the Wicked

I remember seeing this film as a child when it first came out. I disliked it intensely BUT obviously it could not have been as terrible as I thought since I remember it well. I did like both Glynis Johns and Diana Dors. If only these old films were available to us now, I for one would be very happy!!! I remember the cinema where I saw it. It was a 'flea pit' in those days with poor decor and broken seats. The cinema screen was taller than it was wide and the edges were rounded. This was very odd, I thought. I remember that the story dealt with women in prison and followed their misadventures both while 'inside' and after release. I remember being very impressed with Glynis Johns voice and Diana Dors curves. I also remember that the story ended reasonably happy for one but not the other. I was happy when it was over as I had been promised an ice cream for sitting quietly through it!

Changes

For me, "Late Chrysanthemums" was interesting not only because it was my first film of Naruse I completely enjoyed, but because it was technically as modern and innovative as his 30s work I've seen. This doesn't mean innovative editing in the way Godard would introduce it with "Breathless" in 1959, but quite the opposite.

The editing was as fluent as in the best of Hollywood films from the 30s/40s, but at the same time incredibly fitting regarding the way he was telling his story. Unlike them, it never purposefully accentuated anything or tried to make itself "invisible" but, together with the cinematography, made me feel like I was traveling on a gentle stream, constantly feeling the waves beneath me, like a gentle stroke of the hand or the almost unnoticeable rocking of a cradle. In this sense the film was comparable to Ozu's and Mizoguchi's work, but somehow even more subtle.

What was so modern was the fact that the editing seemed almost a character in itself, similar to the remarkable camera-work in Dreyer's Ordet (1954) or Vredens dag (1943) which is revealing us a deeper understanding of the film and its characters rather than simply showing them to us.

I feel that Naruse's editing and cinematography are the most interesting aspects of his films, elevating the stories significance beyond the obvious. The wonderful sets and settings shouldn't be forgotten either! I found the story itself to be rather conventional.

The narrative and its characters were introduced in a very interesting way, and I thought that the first half of the film was setting up a delicately ingenious spectrum of emotions and interrelations. Unfortunately the second half of the film and its resolution were rather didactic and and formulaic compared to the set up (though by itself it would have been perfectly fitting in any other - less complex

  • film). Somehow I felt that he failed a bit in trying to dissolve the

many layers he had woven. Maybe he should have kept them intact. This criticism might seem a bit harsh to a viewer of this film, especially since the procedure is again reminiscent to the way Ozu dealt with the plot in his films. Unfortunately I haven't yet the feeling that Naruse was able to elevate the story and its characters in his films' conclusions in a similarly sublime fashion. The best efforts I have seen to date - Ukigumo (Floating Clouds / 1955) and Midaregumo (Scattered Clouds / 1967) - sustained the energy he had built throughout the narrative, while delivering poignant and resonant endings.

This is already more than most director's are able to do, and in my opinion the basis for a real mastery of the cinematic medium. In this regard, and considering the resonance of the last two films I've seen by him, he may have already become one of my favorites.

The only problem I have at the moment, is where I'm going to see more of his films on the big screen.

Couldn't recapture the magic

Monty Clift and Elizabeth Taylor lit up the screen in A Place in the Sun with their performances. My belief is that David O. Selznick thought that with his wife Jennifer Jones opposite Clift, some of the magic from that film would rub off here.

But there's no magic in Stazione Termini. I saw a butchered version that reached the American cinema. Now it's possible that what now would be called a director's cut would have been better, but I doubt it. Jennifer Jones is fine as the American wife who is leaving Rome after an affair with a local played by Monty Clift. But basically I sat through 63 minutes of one long goodbye.

Up to a few minutes ago I had seen at one point every Montgomery Clift movie except this one. I wish I hadn't seen this one. Poor Monty Clift is about as Italian as Lech Walesa. I think Monty knows this one was going to be a stinkeroo for him and it shows. At one point director Vittorio DeSica explains that Clift has an American mom to explain the lack of Italian accent. Why didn't he cast someone like Rossano Brazzi in the part, God only knows.

I'd guess that Mr. Selznick had something to do with it. David O. Selznick was not terribly rational when it came to his wife's career. Maybe in an American story Jones and Clift might have set some sparks off. But not here.

If you love Totò, or you don't know him, you have to watch this title!

One of the saddest movies of the whole Toto's production. You understand since the outset that the great Neapolitan comic has an unusual role: in deed, he usually plays the penniless, the marginalized, and yet in this film he is a man of class, with a lot of money. A scene of a quarter of an hour without Toto allows the viewer to understand unequivocally that it is a very dramatic movie. Good times made by the director Aldo Fabrizi, who is able to characterizes each character perfectly. There are few scenes of comedy, that are very refined and adapted to the drama of the plot. I remember Toto's titles for the beats of genius, usually. This is definitely a movie that you will remember for the plot and for the wonderful dramatic interpretation of one of the greatest comedians of all time. Surely it is the film that I would recommend to those who doesn't know Toto so much or consider him only an "actor who makes you laugh."

Review :

Ford's own personal favourite - and a masterpiece.

A masterpiece and reputedly John Ford's personal favourite from among his own movies. The sentimentality quotient is unnaturally high, even by Ford's standards and the racial stereotypes are appalling but this is still one of the cinema's greatest pieces of folk-art. It speaks of an American South about as realistic as the Ireland of "The Quiet Man" or "The Rising of the Moon", (another great, under-rated Ford film), where the old guard still cling to memories of a hopelessly romantic past, where blacks are treated 'honourably', even if their sole purpose is to play the banjo and the harmonica and in the name of the eponymous actor to 'Stepin Fetchit'.

By today's standards the film is anything but PC but it has an innocence that transcends its stereotypes and Ford handles the set pieces magnificently. In particular, the funeral of the 'fallen woman', (and mother of the heroine), that ends the film is deeply moving and is among the high points of Ford's work. The film itself is a remake of Ford's earlier "Judge Priest" with Charles Winninger in the role made famous by Will Rogers, but this is altogether superior.

Review :

Forget the History Lesson. Just Sit back and Enjoy...

Just because "Pony Express" is a western and the Indians are characterized as the bad guys, does not mean it is without merit. Certainly viewers who insist that their movies must be politically correct learning experiences or must have educational value like a two hour university lecture will abhor its lighthearted approach and historical inaccuracy. Yet it is precisely this lighthearted approach that makes this movie so much fun.

The four principals, Charlton Heston (Buffalo Bill Cody), Forrest Tucker (Wild Bill Hickok), ravishing Rhonda Fleming, and hoydenish Jan Sterling serve up a potpourri of good-natured banter (and seem to have a lot of fun in doing so) that makes the running time of 101 minutes and incidental plot just whiz by. If nothing else, this movie serves to remind us that most people do have a sense of humor and that life is not all a funeral dirge.

California, led by a group of businessmen, wants to secede from the union and become an independent republic, citing the country's general apathy towards it as the primary reason. Eastern businessmen and politicians, on the other hand, feel that, by improving communications between Washington and California, they can discourage the citizens of that remote state from making such an irrational move. To this end they seek the help from Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill Hickok to organize a "pony express" which will deliver mail and news from East to West and visa-versa in double-quick time. In attempting to implement the scheme, the two friends must first overcome violent opposition from the owner of a stagecoach line who stands to lose a cross-country mail contract if the plan succeeds, hostile Indians who see the advent of the white man as yet another encroachment to their way of life, and the California businessmen themselves whose interests extend beyond Californian independence.

Of course, the story is full of historical inaccuracies. Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok, for instance, barely knew each other. Hickok handled a six-gun much better than Buffalo Bill. "Pony Express" riders were mostly teenage orphan boys who had to be "willing to risk their lives every day" (Even in those days, businessmen knew how to protect themselves against lawsuits.). But so what? I first saw this movie when I was eight years old and loved it so much that I immediately went to the library to read up on these historical characters and events. Was I upset when I found that so much of the plot had been fabricated? Not in the least. I was grateful that the story was interesting enough to have piqued my interest in this specific chapter of American history. Any movie that induces you to want to learn something more cannot be a bad movie.

On the plus side, it does have some good action sequences (this was in the days before horses learned to gallop in slow motion), and uses the Indians as enemy only for dramatic effect and not as a source of derision. In fact, the chief, represented by white man, Pat Hogan, is probably the film's most admirable character. "I have never known Yellow Hand to lie or go back on his word," says Cody at one point and it is not without good reason that he shows some remorse after he is forced to kill him.

It also gives us a look at a young Charlton Heston, before he became a staple of the large, big budget biblical epics. At this point in his career, Heston was still experimenting, trying to find himself as actor by taking on such varied roles as a circus boss, President Andrew Jackson, a South American plantation owner, a soldier of fortune, or a surgeon. Just the fact that he doesn't have to deliver each line as if he were speaking from a pulpit makes his work more interesting, if not necessarily better.

Best of all, it was here that I saw Rhonda Fleming for the first time. I fell in love with her immediately and wanted to marry her when I grew up. When I watch this movie today, I still think it was a good idea.

Despite its overall low ratings, I cannot help but like "Pony Express". It has amiable characters, snappy dialogue (which emphasizes just how much modern screenwriters have lost their sense of humor) and a plot that moves briskly to its predictable conclusion. If the movie hearkens back to simpler, more clear-cut times, it is at least nice to see heroes who genuinely like each other and who can get the job done while having some fun doing it, rather than today's friendless, dour-faced loners with chips on their shoulders who spend every waking minute searching for "the truth."
