A King Like Hardly Any King; A Man Like Hardly Any Man

June 1886, Munich...a new life in freedom has begun for a unique man...the streets of the city see mournful processions; flags, trumpets and bells proclaim the tragic death of the Bavarian king. The impressions among the audience are diverse...their dilemmas touch us: was he a great man 'too good for his times' or merely an eccentric not capable of ruling? A rose placed on his coffin by a beloved soul seems to whisper the story bringing us through a wonderful flashback to the heyday when everyone was so young, so joyful, so musical and the dream that night would shine one day seemed so promising...

The figure of Ludwig II together with his elaborate castles built in Bavaria is mostly associated with Luchino Visconti's 1972 masterpiece. And deservedly so because maestro's film develops the psyche of the 'fairy tale' king together with his motives for weird isolations and discoveries of his own sexuality. Thanks to its length, the use of details, music, contrasting images of white vs. black, of snow vs. darkness and the entire development of the mental states, Visconti's film remains unique and stays away from the traditional view of a feature film. Yet, fewer people know that a long time before 1972, this wondrous German film had been made, the film that still leaves a visual impression in the viewer. Although Kaeutner's film is made in the spirit of the post-war 'Heimatfilms,' the result has little to do with the saccharine sweetness that has, often undeservedly, been 'baptized' as 'kitsch.' This film still proves a certain variety of reasons why it is highly worth viewing.

The aspect that touches us most are the exquisite images, camera shots that leave more sensitive viewers breathless. Valuable cinematography by Douglas Slocombe and elaborate sets of authentic castles where the events actually took place, lavish wardrobe and bright colors make the film a visual feast. That aesthetic merit of the film is also beautifully executed in many romantic scenes that depict Ludwig's spirituality. There is also an excellent use of juxtaposing images that clearly portray the reality vs. fantasy - an aspect that played a decisive role in the king's life.

That aesthetic merit leads to the key quality of any movie...performances. O.W. Fischer, a renowned German actor of the time, does a terrific job combining a sympathetic personality with the eccentric mind, enthusiasm with isolation, link of an artist with the separation of the character. He appears to be at two levels here: as being himself, on his own and as a reflection of the love of his life - Empress Elizabeth widely known to viewers as Sissi (Ruth Leuwerik). To understand him, we are led to understand Sissi - from the very beginning, we are supplied with this perspective: two similar loving souls.

In their scenes, Ludwig's thoughts are manifested and Ludwig's feelings are conveyed. A must see is the scene at Schloss Berg, a very romantic one when they are together, their thoughts are mutual, their desires are similar and the two clouds in the sky occur to 'seal' their common mutual existence 'in Gedanken, in den Wolken' (in thoughts, in clouds). Another very symbolic scene is at the theater when they hold their hands. Of course, the performance of Ms Leuwerik is not comparable to Romy Schneider's portrayals of Sissi, but, actually, the actress offers us a very intelligent glimpse of the character - 'Kaiserin' as seen by Ludwig: through his perceptions, his dreams.

Mr Fischer as Ludwig alone gives an insightful performance. He is a man like hardly any man, a king like hardly any king who has no time for war...he wants to be alone...he loves nature...he adores beauty and art...he has his world, his passions and his idol (Richard Wagner portrayed by Paul Bildt). He is moody...he desires silence but, above all, he desires ULTIMATE FREEDOM. Insightful and psychologically claustrophobic as it may seem, the portrayal has certain limits, which makes watching the film a pleasure because the thoughts do not become too intense. We empathize with the king, we do our best to understand him and recognize something of ourselves in him. Helmut Kautner and O.W. Fischer seem to impose that limit not to make the portrayal unendurable. Another reason is the fact that difficult films were not so popular those days when the depressing images of WWII were still fresh in people.

Among the supporting cast, the actress that is a lovely discovery for me is Marianne Koch as Princess Sophie. Her portrayal shines with special charm, she is lovely as a young woman who loves Ludwig, who wants to marry him...yet, her mother's warning about true happiness in their family gives a new, unexpected standard. The turning point is the moment when she enters the theater with Ludwig and...they are alone...no audience whatsoever! The mesmerizing power that Ludwig captures while listening to Wagner's "Rheingold" occurs to be unendurable for the young princess. The music is so enchanting, so mysterious, so magical, such a blissful moment that seems to touch the very depths of human soul...yet, she cannot stand it. How memorably you can read the intense emotions from her face...tragic desire with tremendous fear. A lovely German actress whom I discovered so late thanks to my best friend.

Finally, a mention must be made of Wagner's music. Since the music had a lasting impact on the king throughout his life, we are supplied with the bits of these specific tunes that seem to touch us, overwhelm us, influence us...

13 June 1886...a new way began for the fairy tale king. No matter if we see it as an act of despair or a dream of utopia...he was a thought provoking figure. This movie is no masterpiece but an important German tribute to the unique personality. A pleasant, enjoyable aesthetic production.

Another "Lost" Noir Classic

Here is yet another gem from the forgotten noir vault. Director Joseph Lewis trades in the quasi-cinema verite style of his GUN CRAZY(1950) for strictly in-studio work and still hits the jackpot. Cinematographer John Alton works his customary chiaroscuro artistry on a fairly straightforward tale of one frustrated but determined police detective longing to collar one supremely confident crime boss.

Cornel Wilde plays the cop with stolid righteousness (although the lawman isn't above trysting with a leggy striptease artist). But the filmmakers put the main focus on the calculating yet tortured (and torturing) mobster played by Richard Conte. Conte, spitting out many of his lines with measured bile, is brilliant: a smug, know-it-all killer backed by the ever-ready menace of Lee Van Cleef and the studied goofiness of Earl Holliman. (As written, these two bring a very special dynamic to post-World War II crime melodrama). Brian Donleavy is on hand as a washed up but still scheming mob kingpin. And Jean Wallace plays the high-falutin' moll who yearns to go back to her world of piano recitals and afternoon teas but who just can't get enough of Conte's sinister mojo. This low budget but highly effective noir makes an excellent double feature with another cheap but powerful film of the genre, BEHIND LOCKED DOORS. Both films are highly recommended.

Just another western, too bad...

The movie starts with a street fight between a cowboy and Anne LeBeau (Joan Taylor) who is half Apache, half white. The fight is about the white town people blaming the Apache for the various crimes in the area. By watching this scene, I know why I'm watching a Roger Corman movie. I'm not an expert on Roger Corman movies, but I think he is always trying to make his movies different from other movies by doing scenes that no other director would do.

The theme of the film is what makes this western somewhat different from other westerns. Corman is trying to deal with prejudice between the Indians and the white people. Anne LeBeau who is a 'halfbreed' lives with her brother some miles out of the Apache reservation. Her brother, Armand LeBeau (Lance Fuller), is leader of a band of outlaws who are committing the crimes the Apache are blamed for. The town people want military troops from the government, but they send Rex Muffett (Lloyd Bridges). He starts an investigation, and he starts with Anne. Anne, who thinks she belongs to the Apache refuses to help him, but somehow the fall in love anyway. Rex suspects Armand, and questions Anne some more, who is now troubled by the fact that Rex might be right. What is she going to do? Betray the Apache by turning her brother in? Or be responsible for a war between the Apache and the white men, by protecting her brother. This is an interesting notion, but I think it's poorly played out in the film. At the end Rex and his men are trying to ambush Armand and his men. It ends in a plain ol' shooting festival with Rex and Armand in a fist fight, with Armand falling off a cliff. I think Corman could do a lot more with the theme in his film. By showing more of the tension between the Indians and the townspeople, there would be a lot more tension in the film, and then we could understand better why Anne has such problems. I think the story is OK, the acting is OK (Lance Fuller does a great job at playing Armand LeBeau), the casting is OK, everything is OK. That makes it a very dull movie. It had potential, but in the end it turns out to be just another Hollywood western.

A Fond Farewell

When the murder of an archaeologist puts a valuable medallion into their hands, Abbott and Costello waste little time in trying to sell it--only to find themselves pursued by police, a slinky adventuress, an Egyptian high priest, and the mummy himself. The concept is amusing, but the real charm of any Abbott and Costello film is the charismatic comic interplay between the stars. Unfortunately, the 1955 MEET THE MUMMY finds the two at a creative low ebb.

Featuring such notable character actors as Richard Deacon and Marie Windsor, the film is competently made and very easy to watch, but to say it lacks the inspiration of Abbott and Costello's best work would be a tremendous understatement. At most, MEET THE MUMMY is mildly amusing in a broadly slapstick sort of way, good for an occasional chuckle at best. It would be their last film at Universal and their next-to-last screen appearance together, so it might be best regarded as a fond farewell.

Interesting and Enjoyable

This movie is "On the Town" meets "American in Paris", but it is unique and highly entertaining. It is the only true musical which features Tony Curtis. (Sure, "Some Like It Hot" is sort of a musical, but Marilyn Monroe handles all of the musical numbers.) Curtis sings and dances and doesn't do a bad job at it. He is competing with Gene Nelson, one of the finest film dancers. Curtis keeps up nicely with Nelson and although his singing isn't spectacular, he does sing in tune. Also appearing in this film is the underrated comedian Paul Gilbert. In the 1950s, Gilbert appeared in three musicals: this one, plus "The Second Greatest Sex" and "You Can't Run Away from It". Gilbert has a nice feel for delivering punch lines and handles physical comedy like a champ. It is a shame that examples of his work are so few. The songs were written by the totally unknown team of Moody and Sherrill. They also wrote songs for Gilbert's "The Second Greatest Sex" and "Fresh from Paris". This is all that is known about them. The songs are melodic and catchy. It is not Sondheim, but it is not meant to be. The musical arrangements are by Henry Mancini; it is early in Mancini's career and he still has not found his trademark French horn and strings combination. He is still writing in a big band style. This film is fast, light and fun, and movie musical fans looking for some good, obscure songs will be delighted with it.

Bewildered would be more apt

As a golden age movie fan I was curious as soon as I saw the listing for this film. It seemed bewildering that I could be unfamiliar with an MGM film from the 50's starring Miss Anne Baxter in Technicolor, set in Paris and directed by the legendary Mitchell Leisen?

Well now I know how. What's bewildering is that a film with those advantages could turn out like this. While visually beautiful this is a flatfooted, turgidly paced suspense film missing the suspense. A very blonde Anne tries to breath life into this but she seems edgy and a bit lost. However like everybody else in this her character is poorly defined. In addition she has the titanic task of acting opposite Steve Forrest, never the most facile of actors, who is beyond wooden in the lead. In no way does he suggest any sort of spirituality or a sense of real conflict with the decisions before him.

He can be blamed somewhat for the failure of the movie but the two main culprits are the nonsensical script and Leisen. Usually able to turn out either saucy concoctions like The Mating Season, Midnight and Kitty or solid dramas along the lines of Hold Back the Dawn and Swing High, Swing Low he is off his game here on how to turn this dull lump of coal into something resembling entertainment.

The film is beautiful to look at, taking advantage of its location shooting with breathtaking views of Paris. Pretty pictures however are not enough to make an entertaining movie. The film is not painfully bad but it is a mediocre effort at best.

no myth of the west, but also no High Noon

Who saw Alfred Werker 's two remarkable westerns "The Last Posse" and Three Hours to Kill" will not be deceived by "At Gunpoint", which basically has the same story as High Noon, but in a totally different style. And the difference in style is huge; High Noon used the myth of the west, from the cinematography to the hero and the ballad, everything was keyed to what we would expect in a standard western, but this time done better. Werker, on the opposite, uses a realistic style, his hero is a shopkeeper who just wants to live a decent life. He is no Wiil Kane. By showing typical town people, their fears, and their decisions when faced by a crisis, Werker manages to make a good western, without the clichés of the fifties. But he throws down the drain the beauty of the myth of the West. We can adapt John Ford's theory and say "When the legend is bigger than the truth, film the legend" and wonder if Werker would have followed he would not have improved the film. But he also might have ruined it.. You will enjoy At Gunpoint as long as you don't compare it to High Noon.

Amongst those listening is Air Marshal Hardie who is due to fly to Tokyo the next day. Hardie initially dismisses the dream because he is scheduled to fly out in a Liberator, but as Hardie arrives at the airport he discovers that the Liberator has developed mechanical problems and has been replaced by a Dakota. When, just before the flight is due to depart, two soldiers board the plane making a complement of eight, Hardie fears that the Dream may be coming true and he is destined to die.

Highly Intelligent Super-Scary Movie

I saw this movie in 1955, when I was 35 and not so long after my time in the Air Force in WWII, so the RAF flight in the Dakota (same as our USAF C47 and the civilian DC3) resonated for me. But it was really the extraordinary level of suspense that made it so memorable. It starts with a dream of a Dakota lost in a storm and crashing onto a rocky beach. Crucial is the exact number on board. As the real trip progresses in stages, passengers get on and off. Just as it seems the fatal number has been circumvented, something happens to re-institute it. The way this was done was so believable and artfully handled. I particularly remember an episode with someone pointing out that telling the pilot the dream is not such a good idea; after all, he needs his skills to fly the plane safely, and if he takes the dream seriously and it makes him nervous...I have used this idea the rest of my life when directing hundreds of people. It touches on a profound bit of philosophy: when is deception justified? A great movie: if you get the chance, don't miss it.

Amazing beauty. Broderick Crawford will make you cry

Il Bidone is the story of an old and tired con man, who one day, when it's too late, finds himself transformed after he's gone through a redemption of sorts. One of Fellini's least seen films, and unfortunately for viewers in the US, a cut version has been the only one available since its initial release. Even still, it's an amazing film. As I remember it was Truffault who said of Il Bidone, 'I could watch Broderick Crawford die for hours!' And he was very right. Crawford tended to be such a hack in the vast majority of his work for films and TV, but Fellini got an extraordinary performance out of him. Makes you wonder if he was capable of things like this all the time - if so - what a sad loss for us. He was a really bad alcoholic and Fellini kept having to change the script, but later in life said it turned out better that way. If you cry while watching La Strada and Le Notti di Cabiria, Il Bidone will make you cry much more. A forgotten and neglected classic. Proof again of Fellini's astonishing love and compassion for all humanity.

Amici per la pelle- the story of a friendship.

This is the story of the friendship of two Italian schoolboys, admirably played by Geronimo Maynier(Mario) and Andrea Scire(Franco). Mario is a lively extrovert from a happy home, Franco is a lonely, more introverted boy who moves from hotel to hotel with his diplomat father. In a series of incidents at their homes and at school we see a happy friendship develop. There follows a rift in the friendship and finally there is a parting. The film is brilliantly directed by Franco Rossi. I first saw the film back in the 1950's and was very moved by it. I do not know if it has been issued on Video or DVD- it certainly should be for it deals in a simple and unmelodramatic way with the strong emotions of adolescent friendships as we have seen more recently in films like "Stand By Me".

A twist of Oliver

I have always thought that Marc Allégret was less interesting than his brother Yves.Unlike him,he never made a truly memorable movie .

This adaptation of the English classic novel is enjoyable enough ,thanks to the cast:Danielle Darrieux can play (she is still playing in 2010!) anything so she is quite credible as an aristocrat;Leo Genn was an excellent Cliffords Chatterley ;the problem is that the movie is French,and although he is fluent in the Moliere Language ,he is the only one in the movie to have a British accent ,which is downright embarrassing! Another big mistake is the atmosphere of the so-called "pub" which is by no means English and looks like any French bistro/café .Erno Crisa ,who plays Oliver,has fallen into oblivion at least in France:I cannot even remember another movie he is in.

The plot is faithful to the novel,the lines are crude for the time (1955)but of course the pictures are rather chaste ,and they sharply contrast with the would be torrid passion.The Catholic Office wrote that it's just because the love scenes "were rather cold" that "they did not forbid their flock the movie" But they quickly added that such a filthy subject was to blame.What else could they do? Seen today,the movie seems tame and harmless,we have seen worse since !The other versions including nudity galore (see Just Jaeckin's "opus" 1981 )have made Marc Allégret's effort obsolete.To think that in 1934 ,in "Le Lac Aux Dames" he was not afraid to show a topless lady in a bed!

See it for Mrs Darrieux!

To my knowledge,it was the first time the novel had been transferred to the screen;it was banned in the US.

One of the best horror films ever made!

I was first introduced to this film in a British Cinema class I took at the College of Santa Fe and it's haunted me ever since! Despite what the box claims, Orson Wells has a small part in the and of the film... but the real star is Alan Badel. The first segment, "In the Picture," deals with a museum attendant who's paintings have a real, and sinister, life of their own. The second segment, "You Killed Elizabeth," is not supernatural, and probably the film's dullest installment, but has some good character to it. The final segment, which shows Badel at his absolute evilest, "Lord Mountdrago," has Wells and Badel as political adversaries, and Wells' murderous dreams become real. Of all the small obscure murder mystery / horror gems to go unnoticed from Britain this is certainly the one I wish would receive more attention. It is chilling (my favorite segment remains "In the Picture"), well acted, and brilliantly scripted. Rent it if you find it at your video store! Watch it if it (miraculously) appears on television! Or simply go out and buy it (you won't regret it!). If you want to see the BEST horror anthology film ever, look no further than THREE CASES OF MURDER.

Film for Thought!

A movie that I saw for the first time decades ago and numerous times since! Every time I watch it, I discover new facets in Harras'personality. On one hand he is the tough guy, the party animal, the womanizer; however, he shows his softer, almost romantic side when he meets Diddo Geiss. I think that the movie could be a wonderful teaching tool, because it illustrates how "non-political", even rebellious Germans were drawn into the Nazi ideology and paid the ultimate price! Udo Jürgens and Marianne Koch were fabulous together! I would recommend this film for upper level German classes in the US. It is a good addition to "Die weisse Rose" or "Sophie Scholl".

Little old ladies gossip and argue..

A new cottage is being built in the town, and there is a "competition" to see who gets to live in it - the owners have stated it will be given to "the married couple with the most number of grandchildren", so that the cottage can be passed down through the family, as if an heir loom. This leads to frantic tallying of the number of grandchildren everyone has and a lot of sniping done by various little old ladies whilst their husbands look pained at the fuss.

A very oddball little film (little, it's only just over an hour in run time); that is anything but predictable! A few births, deaths, and marriages ensue that you'll have no idea who is going to get the cottage, until the moment the key is handed out. Overall, I'd give it about a 6 or 7 out of 10. At least if you don't like it, you don't have to sit through much before it's over!
