Average Tim Holt oater

Tim Holt turns in a workmanlike job in this run-of-the-mill entry in his long-running series of "B" westerns for RKO. The story about cattlemen vs. homesteaders has been done countless times before, and there's nothing new to be found in the script. The action scenes are OK, the production values are good--as they usually were in this series--and there's a better-than- average supporting cast of veteran western players: John Pickard, Kenneth MacDonald, John Merton, Frank Wilcox. Pretty, but wooden, Linda Douglas is the female interest, and the picture moves along at a satisfactory pace. Tim Holt's westerns were always a bit too cut-and-dried for my tastes and Richard Martin's irritating Chito Rafferty has grated on me from the first time I saw him--the patently phony Mexican "accent" and the "devil-may-care" attitude that he was never able to quite pull off--but on the whole they were better than most of the series westerns at the time, especially the awful Whip Wilson ones from Monogram, and this is no better or no worse than others in Holt's series.

Losing Momentum

1951, the Kefauver congressional committee on organized crime and corruption is making headlines, and MGM under new head Dore Schary is trying to make that famously big-budget studio relevant to news of the day. The trouble is that the so-called Tiffany of studios just doesn't have the same feel for gritty material as a Warner Bros. or an RKO. Too bad this film doesn't sustain the harrowing feel of the first 15 minutes, when prominent editor Allridge (Pidgeon) is brutalized after a minor traffic infraction by corrupt Sheriff Burke (Gomez). Allridge's ordeal has the feel of a "sudden nightmare" to it, as if he's been abruptly forced into a savage new world where the old civilized rules no longer apply. It's a backwater county run by the sheriff like a private fiefdom and a jailhouse where inmates rule once the cell door slams shut. I like the way we're shown the difficulties state prosecutor Johnson (Hodiak) encounters in trying to rid the county of Burke and his outlaw regime.

Still and all, the longer the movie lasts, the more momentum it loses, ending with a final 20 minutes of plodding courtroom procedure. There's still some suspense in the air (why did Allridge skip town), but the initial energy has long since dissipated. At least part of the problem lies with uninspired direction that can't sustain the early sense of tension and evil. Too bad noir maestros like Phil Karlson or Anthony Mann weren't running the show. Those reviewers contrasting this film with Karlson's similar Phenix City Story are right on target. Nonetheless, the movie does have its moments, along with a vibrant turn from the under- rated Audrey Totter who never seemed to get the recognition her talent deserved.

Watch it again and again and again...

At home we never tire of this, perhaps the best of the Don Camillo series. The characters are so perfectly drawn and the black and white photography is much more dramatic than colour! It gives a very true-to-life picture of the social and political scene in post-war Italy, with just enough exaggeration to have the spectators rolling in the aisles.

Facing French Justice

Cornel Wilde stars in this World War II drama Operation Secret in which most of the film is done in flashback by witnesses at a post war French tribunal. The object of the inquiry is to determine who killed Maquis resistance leader Paul Picerni.

This film was about the only Marine who may have served in the European Theater of World War II. Wilde is quite the colorful character and what a background he has. He does a hitch in the Marine Corps during peacetime and then enlists in the French Foreign Legion where he and fellow Legionaire Karl Malden just simply refuse to surrender until wounded and ordered to by Captain Steve Cochran. After a stint in a Prison Camp he's repatriated back to France whereupon he flees to Great Britain and tries to enlist in the Marines again. The Marines take him, but rather than send him to the Pacific, Wilde is given spy training and sent back to France where he eventually hooks up with the Maquis.

That the Maquis had a lot of Communists in it is a given fact. But remember this was the beginning of the Cold War so some anti-Communism gets worked into the plot. Many members of the Resistance do not want to give plans for the new Nazi jet airplanes to the Americans and British. That sets up the conflict as Wilde has to deal with both Germans and people in the Maquis who want to do him in.

To say the least I found the whole premise quite bizarre. But I've always liked Cornel Wilde on the screen and this is far from the worst film he ever did. In fact his portrayal of a spy who has to think fast on his feet is quite good.

Tstifying at the tribunal are Malden, Cochran, Jay Novello playing a former Gestapo man, and an ersatz nun played by Phyllis Thaxter. Eventually the murder of Picerni is solved and the perpetrator faces French justice.

Why they had to invent such a wild (no pun intended)background for Wilde is beyond me. If they had just made him a Frenchman in the first place it would have made more sense. Not like Wilde never did a French accent effectively on the screen.

Review :

Out on it's own in the comedy category.

Charming it is but the comedy's scarce. Just about all of this film leaves you wondering what went on. The plot is patchy to say the least, and the film doesn't seem to have the cohesion of other early British comedies you find these stars in. It came across as a complete mish-mash of experimentalism and surrealism, leaving you thinking everyone involved in it was on an illegal substance. Looking at what the director went on to do in his career, this film can be forgiven for being an example of early directorial teeth-cutting.

Margaret Rutherford was well cast, but it felt the director somewhat smothered her talents and over did the 'dotty' approach (and where did all the kids come from giving you that 'St.Trinians' feel in the last 5 minutes?). Richard Hearne left me wishing they had cast someone, not only with a personality, but with a skill for improving a lacklustre dialogue - Alastair Sim could have really done something to improve this film. And Sid James waddling along always moaning about his 'KNITTING'? - I ask you!. As for the Police? They would have been better cast in The Wizard of Oz as the Wicked Witch's bodyguard.

For individual talent, this film was interesting for observing what the cast can do on screen as an alternative to how you have normally seen them. As a film on the whole, it's pretty bad. I would say it's a cross between anything made by Fritz Lang and whoever came up with On The Buses. It just leaves you feeling slightly uncomfortable.

Get it just for the library, and leave it there.

Review :

A great man,a poor movie...

Albert Schweizer ,whose work is more famous abroad than in his countries (the plural is necessary for he was born in German Alsace ,then French citizen after WW1),was one of the great men of the last century,on a league with Ghandi and Martin Luther King. All his life was dedicated to doing good ,to relieve human sufferings .His enemies were yellow fever, leprosy ,malaria...And he knew that he would not, could not,for any reason, kill his brother.

This is minor quibble to mention the historic mistakes:Schweizer was not arrested at the beginning of WW1 ,but in 1917.Father Charles de Foucault, who, after a racy past ,became a saint ,is featured in the film but he was killed in 1918,by Touaregs.

Pierre FResnay was certainly one of the greatest actors of the French cinema. He was a wonderful "Monsieur Vincent" (in Maurice Cloche's film about Saint Vincent de Paul). But he almost became ridiculous as Albert Schweizer with his mustache, his fake Alsatian accent and his ham acting.Abetted (so to speak) by bombastic directing (turgid music) and a poor script,he makes the potentially absorbing story drastically boring.

Jeanne Moreau in her prime appears as nurse Marie.

Based on Gilbert Cesbron's eponymous play ;the title means "at midnight, you will be arrested ,Dr Schweizer ": He was an Alsatian, thus an "enemy" for the French!

A hidden gem that needs to be viewed by more cinema buffs.

Fernandel is brilliant in multiple roles that stretch his abilities as a wonderful comedic actor with the "horse faced" grin. The story concept is clever with a delightful "surprise" conclusion, yet it is the episodic statements that give full bloom to this wonderful film; especially the sequence aboard the tramp steamer when a gambling game involves the reaction of its players to a housefly.

Review :

A King Like Hardly Any King; A Man Like Hardly Any Man

June 1886, Munich...a new life in freedom has begun for a unique man...the streets of the city see mournful processions; flags, trumpets and bells proclaim the tragic death of the Bavarian king. The impressions among the audience are diverse...their dilemmas touch us: was he a great man 'too good for his times' or merely an eccentric not capable of ruling? A rose placed on his coffin by a beloved soul seems to whisper the story bringing us through a wonderful flashback to the heyday when everyone was so young, so joyful, so musical and the dream that night would shine one day seemed so promising...

The figure of Ludwig II together with his elaborate castles built in Bavaria is mostly associated with Luchino Visconti's 1972 masterpiece. And deservedly so because maestro's film develops the psyche of the 'fairy tale' king together with his motives for weird isolations and discoveries of his own sexuality. Thanks to its length, the use of details, music, contrasting images of white vs. black, of snow vs. darkness and the entire development of the mental states, Visconti's film remains unique and stays away from the traditional view of a feature film. Yet, fewer people know that a long time before 1972, this wondrous German film had been made, the film that still leaves a visual impression in the viewer. Although Kaeutner's film is made in the spirit of the post-war 'Heimatfilms,' the result has little to do with the saccharine sweetness that has, often undeservedly, been 'baptized' as 'kitsch.' This film still proves a certain variety of reasons why it is highly worth viewing.

The aspect that touches us most are the exquisite images, camera shots that leave more sensitive viewers breathless. Valuable cinematography by Douglas Slocombe and elaborate sets of authentic castles where the events actually took place, lavish wardrobe and bright colors make the film a visual feast. That aesthetic merit of the film is also beautifully executed in many romantic scenes that depict Ludwig's spirituality. There is also an excellent use of juxtaposing images that clearly portray the reality vs. fantasy - an aspect that played a decisive role in the king's life.

That aesthetic merit leads to the key quality of any movie...performances. O.W. Fischer, a renowned German actor of the time, does a terrific job combining a sympathetic personality with the eccentric mind, enthusiasm with isolation, link of an artist with the separation of the character. He appears to be at two levels here: as being himself, on his own and as a reflection of the love of his life - Empress Elizabeth widely known to viewers as Sissi (Ruth Leuwerik). To understand him, we are led to understand Sissi - from the very beginning, we are supplied with this perspective: two similar loving souls.

In their scenes, Ludwig's thoughts are manifested and Ludwig's feelings are conveyed. A must see is the scene at Schloss Berg, a very romantic one when they are together, their thoughts are mutual, their desires are similar and the two clouds in the sky occur to 'seal' their common mutual existence 'in Gedanken, in den Wolken' (in thoughts, in clouds). Another very symbolic scene is at the theater when they hold their hands. Of course, the performance of Ms Leuwerik is not comparable to Romy Schneider's portrayals of Sissi, but, actually, the actress offers us a very intelligent glimpse of the character - 'Kaiserin' as seen by Ludwig: through his perceptions, his dreams.

Mr Fischer as Ludwig alone gives an insightful performance. He is a man like hardly any man, a king like hardly any king who has no time for war...he wants to be alone...he loves nature...he adores beauty and art...he has his world, his passions and his idol (Richard Wagner portrayed by Paul Bildt). He is moody...he desires silence but, above all, he desires ULTIMATE FREEDOM. Insightful and psychologically claustrophobic as it may seem, the portrayal has certain limits, which makes watching the film a pleasure because the thoughts do not become too intense. We empathize with the king, we do our best to understand him and recognize something of ourselves in him. Helmut Kautner and O.W. Fischer seem to impose that limit not to make the portrayal unendurable. Another reason is the fact that difficult films were not so popular those days when the depressing images of WWII were still fresh in people.

Among the supporting cast, the actress that is a lovely discovery for me is Marianne Koch as Princess Sophie. Her portrayal shines with special charm, she is lovely as a young woman who loves Ludwig, who wants to marry him...yet, her mother's warning about true happiness in their family gives a new, unexpected standard. The turning point is the moment when she enters the theater with Ludwig and...they are alone...no audience whatsoever! The mesmerizing power that Ludwig captures while listening to Wagner's "Rheingold" occurs to be unendurable for the young princess. The music is so enchanting, so mysterious, so magical, such a blissful moment that seems to touch the very depths of human soul...yet, she cannot stand it. How memorably you can read the intense emotions from her face...tragic desire with tremendous fear. A lovely German actress whom I discovered so late thanks to my best friend.

Finally, a mention must be made of Wagner's music. Since the music had a lasting impact on the king throughout his life, we are supplied with the bits of these specific tunes that seem to touch us, overwhelm us, influence us...

13 June 1886...a new way began for the fairy tale king. No matter if we see it as an act of despair or a dream of utopia...he was a thought provoking figure. This movie is no masterpiece but an important German tribute to the unique personality. A pleasant, enjoyable aesthetic production.

Predictable, Laughable, Absurd, Funny, Awful Lines, Ham Actors and Actresses – But Absolutely Cult

As most of the movie lovers, I discovered Ed Wood after watching Tim Burton's "Ed Wood", and since then, I try to see all his movies. I have just watched "Jail Bait", his attempt to make a serious film-noir, and I really laughed along its 72 minutes running time. The first points that call the attention in "Jail Bait" are the ham actors and actresses, and the awful lines. The cast seems to be amateurish, and the screenplay seems to be written by a stupid teenager so ridiculous and silly the dialogs and situations are. The next point to attract me was the beauty and elegance of Theodora Thurman, in the character of the lover of the gangster Vic Brady. Another point is that it is always night along the story. The annoying music score is probably one of the worse I have ever listened in a movie. The funniest parts, in my point of view, are the arrival of Lt. Bob Lawrence to Dr. Boris Gregor's house: from the outside, the lights are turned-off, but when Marilyn Gregor opens the door, the lights are on; the death of Don Gregor is simply hilarious; and what about the surgery of Vic Brady in a sofa? This movie certainly is predictable, laughable, absurd, funny, but it is also absolutely cult. My vote is four.

Review :

There are so many scenes and shifts of teon, you're sure to like some of it.

The Diamond Wizard (1954)

A goofy, lighthearted, sprawling smuggling and international crime film. Yes, a contradiction. But boy are there zany aspects, like the low-tech high stakes attempts to make diamonds artificially. And the main characters are a British and an American agent both after the same charming American woman who is suddenly in town.

You might enjoy this as a spoof (which it is not), or as pure camp (which it almost is). There are false foreign accents, talking and reading from criminal files, and constant back and forths (with literal winking) between the two men, who seem to work well together by doing the same thing at the same time.

The odd thing is it's all kind of fun. It helps to have something else to do while watching--you won't miss any details, I think, since it putters along with easy to follow twists. The one scene to watch is the opening one, which gives away not only the very low budget limitations but also the basic characters involved. At other points there are little delights--like when the ship's whistle blows and we see the top of a ship, until the camera pulls back and you find we are looking at a model.

So, if you don't mind a little silly romp with lots of scenes and a fairly ambitious scope, but with a frivolous and frankly low quality aspect, you might just like this. It's not awful, which is something. Parts of it look like they were shot in Frankenstein's castle. And there is a really terrific escalator scene that is almost worth it right there, toward the end, better than the movie deserves. And what are "pure galvanized iron filings" you might ask?

Wonderful British Satirical Comedy of the 1950s

Margaret Rutherford was amazingly endearing. Despite her tiny stature and her lack of physical attributes to recommend her, indeed despite the largest flabby chin ever possessed by a woman in the history of the cinema, her ponderous physique, her wobbly face, and countless other handicaps to elegance, she had a magic which transcended all these limitations and made her loved by the public. She specialized in a subtle, under-stated form of self-deprecation, on the strict understanding (a kind of conspiracy between her and the audience) that she didn't really necessarily mean it, and that she might be very much cleverer than she appeared on the surface. And in this film, she had the opportunity really to 'let her rip' and do all that business as an integral part of the story. Rutherford was not a 'Ha! Ha! Ha!' comedienne, she was a subliminal comedienne who mixed gentle wit with profound satire, as effortlessly as drinking one of her customary cups of tea. She was made for this story and this story was made for her, which may be why the producers chose to film it with her, of course. In the film, she is the elderly inattentive aunt of a rich rogue who owns some questionable businesses connected with gambling, prostitution, risqué parties, and other things which once appeared shocking but which are now routinely indulged in by ten year-olds. (In other words, this film was made in 'The Innocent Fifties'.) The nephew dies and leaves it all to her because she is the only relative who is not a grasping sycophant after his money. So enter Margaret Rutherford, who quietly sets about setting all things to rights, enabling the four prostitutes to retire in comfort and give up their trade, rectifying the situation regarding her nephew's illegitimate daughter (played by a pert and cheerful young Jill Bennett), rewarding the worthy, cleansing the Augean Stables, and generally getting everything ship-shape. The film is peppered with numerous famous character actors of the time, such as Ronald Shiner, A. E. Matthews, Fay Compton, and Nigel Stock. Everybody's favourite barrow boy, Sid James, is terribly funny as an East End bookie at a greyhound race track who is driven to hysterical exasperation by Rutherford. Matthews is excellent as the rascally nephew. Shiner somewhat over-clowns as a butler, and relies too much on grimaces. It is all very good fun indeed, for those of a gentle disposition who do not require comedies to be full of side-splitting laughter and pratfalls. As always with these movies, they are of considerable interest to social historians, if there are any out there who are genuinely interested in human history rather than in statistics and data. Calling all humans interested in human history! Do you view me, over?

It gets so good that Heinz seeks a loan from the property owner of St Paulis night clubs, played by Gustav Knuth, but his associates ,one of them played by Fritz Wagner are a bunch of crooks and he doesn't know this. Heinz has a problem with Hans spending a lot of time with his daughter Hans niece, who's in love with the son of the property owner, thinking he's stealing affection away from him but he always too busy to pay any attention to his daughter. Review :

Sparkling MGM musical. Jane Powell & Debbie Reynolds dazzle.

Unlike MGM's expensive, classic musicals of the 1950s, the modest, light-hearted but equally delicious "Athena" has been all-but-forgotten. A shame, because this lilting, lively melodious lark is not only a wryly amusing satire on an eccentric family of health-food nutritionists/numerologists, but, most importantly, a dazzling showcase for some of the most tuneful musical numbers to grace any film of its era. The score, by Ralph Martin and Hugh Blane (of "Meet Me in St. Louis" fame), offers such treats as Jane Powell singing the poignant, haunting ballad "Love Can Change the Stars" (which should have become a popular hit); Powell, Debbie Reynolds and their 5 sisters performing a breathtakingly energetic, knockout song-and-dance production number "I Never Felt Better"; and Ms. Powell (never more bewitchingly alluring) setting off vocal fireworks with her superb rendition of Donizetti's "Chacun Le Sait" from the operetta "Daughter of the Regiment." The plot, wherein Powell & Ms. Reynolds defie their nutritionist fanatic grandfather's (a delightful Louis Calhern) dictums by falling in love with, respectively, Edmund Purdom and Vic Damone (two carnivores with the wrong "signs") is decades ahead of its time in its wise, gentle and good-humored satire of life-styles and fads (culminating in a body-builder contest where one of Calhern's proteges is Steve Reeves, who would a mere 4 years later attain international screen stardom as "Hercules"). Amusing as it is, the plot rightfully takes second-place to the wondrous cast of MGM's most gifted young musical talents of the day--in their full vocal and dancing glory captured in glistening pasteled Technicolor. (Sadly, they were all soon to be given their walking papers when Television became the new national rage, and the first of the terrified studio's contract players to be dismissed were the stars of its taken-for-granted musicals. Indeed, Powell, Reynolds and Damone would co-star in only one more MGM songfest, "Hit the Deck"--as warm, charming, and tuneful as "Athena"--as well as a boxoffice disappointment.) Meanwhile, tune in "Athena" the next time TCM shows it--and don't be surprised if, weeks later, you find yourself humming, whistling or singing Ms. Powell's glorious delivery of what is perhaps this delectable movie's most rousing, catchy tune--the zesty, jubilant "Vocalize"!

Review :

A true biographical story, but mainly concentrates on the early life of Eileen Joyce, a famous pianist.

This film certainly has rough edges, but this suits the depiction of the location at the time being portrayed. Most of the film was centred on the childhood of pianist Eileen Joyce. She lived in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia, and at the time (some would say still) it was an isolated and rough mining area. Eileen's father was there to try to find a fortune in gold, but was actually very poor. The story is really about the struggles that the family and Eileen went through to develop Eileen's piano playing skills. The acting is adequate, without being exceptional, but this is not as important as the story, which is well presented. Some of the scenes of Eileen as a young girl actually 'playing' the harmonica and piano are very unconvincing. This can be forgiven as the audience is primarily there to be informed, rather than be entertained in the conventional filmic sense. The only real criticism I have is that the film ends too soon. I learned that Eileen Joyce went through a lot to actually become famous, but I learned nothing about what she did to become as famous as she did. The viewer gets the feeling that the production company ran out of money, so the bulk of Eileen Joyce's life was dealt with in about a minute of celluloid - lots of the old newspaper headlines ploy! Overall, this is a good film, and well worth watching. I rated it 7 out of 10.
