Washed up singer/actor Frank Elgin has a chance to make a come-back when director Bernie Dodd offers him the leading role in his new musical. Frank however is very insecure, turns to alcohol and shuns even the smallest of responsibilities, leaving everything up to his wife Georgie who finds it harder and harder to cope with her husband's lack of spirit. Bernie tries to help Frank regain his self-confidence, believing that it is Georgie who's the cause of his insecurity.

Review :

Slow start but becomes fascinating

In the ranking of American playwrights Clifford Odets is usually placed in the second tier behind Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Miller, Lillian Hellman and Tennessee Williams. His output was something less than theirs and his two best-known plays, Waiting for Lefty and The Country Girl, never quite reached the artistic pinnacle of say, Miller's Death of a Salesman or Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire. Nonetheless as a movie The Country Girl is a brilliant piece of work thanks in part to a fine adaptation by director and screenwriter George Seaton (Oscar for best screen adaptation, 1954) and sterling performances by Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and William Holden. Seeing this for the first time I was almost as much impressed by Holden, who played a part very much in keeping with his character and with other parts he has played, as I was by Kelly and Crosby who both did 180 degree turns in type-casting.

Grace Kelly won an Oscar as the faithful, strong-willed, bitter, dowdy co-dependent wife of crooner Crosby who played a whimpering, guilt-ridden alcoholic. You have to see Grace Kelly in the bags-under-her-eyes make-up and spinster get-ups to believe it. She looks at least ten years older than her 25 years with a sour puss of a face and an attitude to match. I think she won best actress (over Judy Garland in A Star Is Born) partly because her appearance was so stunningly...different. (While I'm musing, I wonder if this was the film of hers that was banned in Monaco.) It would seem to be the height of creative casting to put her into such a role, yet she is excellent, wonderful to watch as always, her timing exquisite, her expression indelible, and her sense of character perfect. When she says to Holden, "You kissed me--don't let that give you any ideas," and then when we see her face after he leaves, loving it, we believe her both times.

Bing Crosby too is a sight to behold in what must have been his finest 104 minutes as a dramatic actor. He too played way out of character and yet one had the sense that he knew the character well. He was absolutely pathetic as the spineless one. (In real life Der Bingo was reportedly a stern task master at home--ask his kids.) Clearly director Seaton should be given some of the credit for these fine performances. When your stars perform so well, it's clear you've done something right.

The production suffers--inevitably, I suppose--from the weakness of the play within the play. Crosby is to be the star of a Broadway musical called "The Land Around Us." (What we see of the musical assures us it's no Oklahoma!) He's a little too old and stationary for the part, but of course he sings beautifully. (Painful was the excruciatingly slow audition scene opening the movie with Crosby singing and walking through a thoroughly boring number.) Holden is the director and he is taking a chance on Crosby partly because he believes in him and partly because he has nobody else. Naturally if Crosby returns to the bottle, everything will fall apart.

What about the nature of alcoholism as depicted by Odets? Knowing what we now know of the disease, how accurate was his delineation? I think he got it surprising right except for the implied cause. Crosby's character goes downhill after the accidental death of his son, which he blames on himself. Odets reflects the belief, only finally dispelled in recent decades, that alcoholism was indicative of a character flaw, as he has Crosby say he used his son's death as an excuse to drink. Today we know that alcoholism is a disease, a chemical imbalance. Yet Odets knew this practical truth (from the words he puts into the mouth of William Holden's character): an alcoholic stops drinking when he dies or when he gives it up himself. It is interesting to note that as a play The Country Girl appeared in 1950, the same year as William Inge's Come Back, Little Sheba, which also dealt with alcoholism. The intuitive understanding of alcoholism by these two great playwrights might be compared with the present scientific understanding. (See for example, Milam, Dr. James R. and Katherine Ketcham. Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism [1981] or Ketcham, Katherine, et al. Beyond the Influence: Understanding and Defeating Alcoholism [2000].)

Here's a curiosity: the duet song (best number in the movie; Crosby sang it with Jacqueline Fontaine) has the lyric "What you learn is you haven't learned a thing," which is what the alcoholic learns everyday.

And here's a familiar line, cribbed from somewhere in the long ago: Fontaine asks Crosby aren't you so-and-so, and he replies, "I used to be."

Watchable Pseudo Western...

A airplane crash leaves Lawman Sheriff Munson (Stephan McNally) and Prisoner Ed Stone (Rory Calhoun) stranded on a Sheep Ranch in the modern (1954) West. Between escape attempts ED makes a play for the beautiful Cally Canham (Jean Simmons) who is holding down the ranch for her Father David (Brian Aherne). MUNSON has a personal grudge against ED, but FATHER David arrives at the close too sort things out and you expect ED and CALLY will eventually get together, nuff said.

Good scenery and interesting casting are the most worthwhile features of this film. Calhoun and McNally seem quite at home in the West, but Aherne and Simmons would seem too be by intellect and temperament more suited for a drawing room. Jean does fill out her 'jeans' quite well and is as sexy in those as any more feminine costume. She would exhibit the same assets in THE BIG COUNTRY (1958). The film is worth watching just for her.

Review :

some clichés, some miscasting, some politics, but it's still pretty good

I liked "Thunder in the East," a 1952 release for this film, made in 1949.

This film looks to have been made on a smallish budget and takes place in the first years of India's freedom from Britain. A man named Steve Gibbs (Alan Ladd) flies in a plane filled with armaments in the Ghandahar province in order to sell them. However, the Prime Minister, Singh (Charles Boyer) wants to achieve a peaceful resolution with the leader of the guerrillas, Khan.

The British living in India are delusional, not realizing that the guerrillas are about to attack. The ones who do get out end up dead en route. Gibbs meets Joan Willoughby (Deborah Kerr) and her parson father (Cecil Kellaway) and manages to meet the maharajah, who defers to the Prime Minister and then leaves the country for the winter.

Gibbs offers his plane, but he gouges the people wanting to leave, which angers Joan, who was falling for him. Now she turns against him and no one will give into what they call blackmail. They gather at the palace, waiting for the guerrillas to attack, and hope that the Prime Minister will let them use the guns he has.

There are a couple of problems with this film. One is the casting of Charles Boyer and his French accent and heavy makeup. I have to say, he was wonderful. He was an underrated actor, but miscast.

The script has a few clichés, particularly the hard core businessman falling for a sweet, altruistic woman. Nevertheless, it certainly held my interest.

I read some complaints about the ending, which for me was the best part of the film. Very dramatic and very exciting. As far as the Prime Minister's beliefs, he was a human being and acted on an injustice viscerally. His idealism went out the window, and that's okay. That's what happens sometimes.

Alan Ladd did a good job in a Bogart-type role. I never considered him much of an actor, but that monotone type of line reading works fine in this type of part, as it did in his film noirs. Deborah Kerr was lovely as a good woman who prides herself on her independence and fearful of losing it.

The film was probably trying to make the point that Gandhi was an idiot, and that following his principles wasn't a good idea. Not sure I'd conclude that in all cases. Maybe in this one.

Perfect

A Holiday worth celebrating every day of the year. The Princess awakens from her slumbers in this classic fall-from-innocence, coming-of-age tale with a royal twist. Audrey Hepburn stakes her claim as the most perfect woman who ever lived. Gregory Peck at his best as the ne'er-do-well American reporter who guides her chastely from girlhood to womanhood. What can I add? One of the finest movies ever made. Now will you please stop reading this review and rent the movie, for heaven's sake? ...Now, according to the rules, this review has to go for at least 10 lines. And yet I've said everything I have to say about Roman Holiday. It is perfect. Rent it. Or better yet, buy it. You won't regret it. There, now that's 11 lines, that ought to do it.

N'Y Touchez Pas!

A remake of his brother Marc's movie of the thirties which I have not seen,"Mam'Zelle Nitouche seemed to indicate that Yves Allégret, after making great movies in the 1947-1953 era,was a spent force .

Even Fernandel was not able to save this dud ;the script is awful:the first half is a spate of clichés about mistaken identities (the earnest organist of the convent writes light operettas);the second is even worse, recalling the coarse comedies of the thirties ,with the obligatory funny trick of a female presence in the barracks .

Louis De Funès appears (but you've got to be patient) as a sergeant .Pier Angeli ,the actress James Dean wanted to marry, is cast as the false ingénue.

It was the first time Y.Allégret had experimented color,at a time when the French cinema was mostly black and white :pearls before swine.

Word to the wise :take "Manèges" instead.

A small town is victimized by many unexplained fires.

Watch The Flaming Urge Trailer :

Review :

No joke without fire

FLAMING URGE is, in its way a remarkable film by one time director-writer Harold Ericson which ought to be better known. It concerns the arrival in a small town of Tom Smith (Harold Lloyd, Jnr). Tom has a problem - he is irresistibly attracted to fires and compulsively chases every fire engine which is en route to a blaze. He has chosen this town as the level of fire incidents is the smallest on record that he can discover, in order to help himself overcome his pyrophilia. Tom finds himself a job in a local store with an understanding boss, but soon discovers that the number of fires locally is suddenly increasing and, despite his protests, he becomes chief suspect as the local arsonist...

A pleasant and curious enough film about an unusual fetish on first viewing, it is only when one discovers (as other reviewers here note) that 'flaming' is homosexual slang for quick arousal/or 'flaunting effeminate traits' that the real sociological interest emerges. In real life Harold LLoyd Jnr was the great comedian's gay, alcoholic son who died early at age 40, victim of his life style. In manner and speech in this, one of his few starring vehicles, he reminds one of his famous father, albeit without the signature glasses. Thus FLAMING URGE's early comic scenes in the drapery store where the young man works, recall the elder LLoyd's work in the first half of SAFETY LAST, even to the point of a couple of sly, specific visual references to the older comedy. Lloyd snr of course was straight; some of the impact of FLAMING URGE is an implied gay deconstruction of a famous screen persona - one wonders what dad said when he saw it.

In short, a fun film with substantial gay coding throughout - right down to the good deal of banter situated around the tie counter (at one point the star creates a gigantic bow tie, by way of marketing) and play on pencils. Tom's 'problem' is treated with a calmness and respect for difference throughout - miles away from the sniggering and caricature with which it might have been received elsewhere. And while the film necessarily ends with a heterosexual wedding, it proves unconvincing. FLAMING URGE can be recommended, especially to those who like lesser known gay/camp classics such as TURNABOUT.

Review :

A Completely Misguided Period Piece

Opera is a different stage art from spoken theatre, let alone theatrical films or television. Opera succeeds on its own terms or it doesn't signify at all. The "problem" with opera is not that opera singers are not as bodacious as film stars; the principal requirement in opera is that the musical drama be conveyed in musical as well as visual terms in a manner all its own, a stage mystery that is easier to experience than to analyse.

Non-musicians seldom understand this. They seek to graft on whatever expressive values they trade in within the medium they are familiar with, without understanding why and how opera works on its own, without their alien help.

Thus the woman who sings Amneris in the soundtrack of this film, Ebe Stignani (1903-1974) may have been, at 50, wider than she was tall and not Hollywood's idea of an appropriate screen figure, yet she was, even in 1953, an amazing Amneris, successful throughout the world in this, her greatest role, consistently making dramatic contact with her audiences through the musico-dramatic medium of Verdi's music. And she had been doing so since her debut (as Amneris), in 1925.

Lois Maxwell, who lip-syncs to Stignani's singing here, simply makes no impact, dramatic, filmic, musical or even sex-appealing. We KNOW that Stignani was a hugely successful Amneris without Maxwell. What does Maxwell add to Signani's Amneris through the medium of this film? Nothing at all.

A film that brought us, even at once removed, the greatness of a Stignani or a Renata Tebaldi, might have had some filmic justification. But this film, which adds nothing at all to what the singers had to contribute and rather detracts from it, is of no value.

What the film does underline is the limitations, cultural, visual, technological, of a merely mechanical medium. Everything about this film is ludicrously dated, except the singing of the great singers whom it pretended to "improve" all those long years ago.

Review :

Stay away from Voodoo Voodoo bad medicine!

**SPOILERS** Jungle Jim, Johnny Weissmuller, gets involved with a fugitive Nazi Karl Werner aka Col. Heinrich Schultz, Michel Fox, as well as a gang of hoodlums out to get him. Not because of Schultz's war record but because of him having hid over $2,000,000.00 in art works that he smuggled out of Europe after the war and hid somewhere on the African Continent.

Before we ever even get to know about Schultz there's this Voodoo jungle cult headed by their witch doctor and head man Mr. Wombulu,Charles Horvath, worshiping a magical Voodoo Tiger in darkest Africa. The natives and Wombulu himself looking as if their from the Amazon Jungle of South America instead of native Africans looking more Hispanic or native South American Indian then dark and indigenous African warriors and tribesmen. That has you so confused at times that you don't exactly know just what part of the world the film is supposed to be taking place in? The movie "Voodoo Tiger" has a tiger escape from a plane that crash-landed in the jungle that was part of a act with it's master the beautiful exotic dancer Shailimar,Jean Dean. The confused natives thinking that she's some kind of Voodoo Goddess who then uses her influence with them to keep Jungle Jim and his fellow white-men and one woman museum curator Phillis Bruce, Jean Byron, from being killed by them. For once Jungle Jim isn't upstaged by his pet chimp Tamba with Tamba being given very little screen time by the films director. He doesn't what his big star former Tarzan Johnny Weissmuller to end up, like in most of the movies with Tamba co-staring in. Having Weissmuller looking like a monkey with Tamba not only getting the best lines, and laughs, but in many cases the girl as well.

Being taken prisoner by Wombulu's Voodoo men as well as the local head hunters Jungle Jim & Co.are slated to be sacrificed to the Voodoo Tiger but to gave Jungle Jim a chance to strut his stuff he's put into a lions cage and given the choice to live if he can defeat the wild and savage beast or end up as it's supper if he loses. The lion, who was obviously drugged to keep him from mauling the jungle man, in his fight with Jungle Jim looks as if he'd rather go to sleep and doesn't even try to put up any fight at all. Jungle Jim easily puts the lion away, like an alligator wrestler puts away the big reptile by rubbing it's stomach, in no time at all. Wombulu going against his word, by not letting Jungle Jim and friends go free, has Jim makes a run for it together with the white captives held by the Voodoo head hunters into the open jungle. The tiger meanwhile is always getting into fights with local jungle animals, like crocodiles buffalo's and leopards, before he just gets so sick and tired of being used by the Voodoo men and head hunters that he attacks them. The tiger has the entire Voodoo cult run for their lives thus giving Jungle Jim & Co. a chance to escape.

Everything turns out right for the good guys, Jungle Jim & Co., in the end with the bad guys getting caught by the natives and run through with spears and Schultz being captured by Jim and friends and being forced, or obliged, to reveal where the stolen art works and painting are. The big hero of the flick after Jungle Jim of course Maj. Bill Green, Robert Bray, ends up getting the girl Phillis but Jungle Jim does him one better he ends up getting the monkey; Tamba.

Review :

Almost, but not quite

"Sound Off" was Richard Quine's third major feature effort and his first encounter as a director with Mickey Rooney. It was also his first writing partnership with Blake Edwards. What sounded like a sure fire idea, cocky entertainer Rooney being drafted, should have been uproariously funny. It's been done before by most of the classic film comedians, and Rooney's over the top activities are well suited to this premise. When Rooney is permitted to go wild and do his stuff, like in the non-Hardy pictures with Judy Garland, the MGM comedy "A Slight Case of Larceny", and even the cheap, but brilliant "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini", he is a top comic, deserving far more praise. However, Quine seems to restrain him here. In scenes where his superiors should have overstated their impatience with him, they treat him with some respect. These scenes are realistic and warm instead of being over exaggerated for comic effect. Quine is a very mannered director and his quirkiness makes films like "Operation Mad Ball" and "Bell, Book and Candle" special and funnier. That quirkiness seems to be missing from "Sound Off". It is there in his earlier Columbia short comedies, and his style, very much at odds with Jules White's mode of operation, makes these little comedies misfires. "Sound Off" is just a little too bland in style and performance. However, there is a good amount slapstick, which Rooney excels in, and it helps. Writer Blake Edwards has yet to find his unique comedy style, and this is to the advantage of the film at hand. All the actors seem to be a little too restrained. Even Rooney, a performer known for "chewing up the scenery" keeps it low key. This is unfortunate, since Rooney is special and unique when he can go crazy. The musical numbers are an added bonus to this film and Rooney performs them with confidence and style. The next Quine-Edwards-Rooney Columbia service comedy, "All Ashore", is superior to "Sound Off" in almost all departments. However, Rooney's personality is better served by "Sound Off".

This is one of my favorite old movies. You can't go wrong with this one--if you ever have a chance to see it! I don't recall enough details to improve upon what's been said by other reviewers, but each part was engrossing (though I agree that "The Ransom of Red Chief" was the weakest dramatization of a great short story of the bunch), especially "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Last Leaf." Beautifully executed remake of "Roberta"

Typical MGM treatment. Not much plot but the musical numbers are beautifully staged and the whole production is much more enjoyable than the Astaire-Rogers version. Grayson and Keel blend well in their duets and Ann Miller is in top form. Marge and Gower Champion have a field day in their roles and certainly deserve the praises they received during their time together. Red Skelton was always a class act and this role is no exception.

Martha is a dress designer who is longing for her big break, and finally gets it when she manages to convince her boss (whose designs are stuck in the past) that she needs a holiday. Alison, who is fresh out of school, assists Martha in getting the new company off the ground. The movie starts in 1938 and follows the course of the two girls and their careers over a period of about ten years. A smattering of comedy, a little romance, overall this is a fine drama. Half of it is set on the catwalk, and there are plenty of gorgeous outfits to look at, stylish even fifty years later.

It's the end of the Civil War and the Hammond brothers Neal (Hudson) and Dan (Ryan) return to the family ranch in Texas. Neal is happy to graft away on the ranch but Dan wants considerably more. But Dan's plans are altered after an encounter with Cord Hardin (Burr), an encounter that sees Dan switch to the wrong side of the law. A switch that drives a wedge thru the Hammond family, particularly since Neal has decided to don a badge and become a Marshal of Austin.

Interesting and watchable early Western effort from Budd Boetticher. It has some psychological aspects that mark it out as being above average. Themes of greed and family strife are of course nothing new in the grand scheme of the Western movie, but Boetticher and his cast knit them together here with some conviction, notably Ryan who was in the middle of a great run of movies that included On Dangerous Ground, Beware, My Lovely and The Naked Spur. There's no real complexities to the characters, but they are well formed, and the finale has the courage of its convictions. There's also some very neat period costuming from Rosemary Odell, with the quite ravishing Adams benefiting greatly there. The main problematic issues outside of some narrative familiarity come with being asked to believe that Ryan and Hudson (whose limp) are brothers, and that McIntire is Ryan's father (there's only two years between them in reality). Whilst there's sadly a lack of impacting outdoor photography; even if that's off set a touch by the easy on the eye set designs for the town by Russell A. Gausman & Joseph Kish.

A more than adequate time filler for the discerning Western fan. 6/10

Interesting and Enjoyable

This movie is "On the Town" meets "American in Paris", but it is unique and highly entertaining. It is the only true musical which features Tony Curtis. (Sure, "Some Like It Hot" is sort of a musical, but Marilyn Monroe handles all of the musical numbers.) Curtis sings and dances and doesn't do a bad job at it. He is competing with Gene Nelson, one of the finest film dancers. Curtis keeps up nicely with Nelson and although his singing isn't spectacular, he does sing in tune. Also appearing in this film is the underrated comedian Paul Gilbert. In the 1950s, Gilbert appeared in three musicals: this one, plus "The Second Greatest Sex" and "You Can't Run Away from It". Gilbert has a nice feel for delivering punch lines and handles physical comedy like a champ. It is a shame that examples of his work are so few. The songs were written by the totally unknown team of Moody and Sherrill. They also wrote songs for Gilbert's "The Second Greatest Sex" and "Fresh from Paris". This is all that is known about them. The songs are melodic and catchy. It is not Sondheim, but it is not meant to be. The musical arrangements are by Henry Mancini; it is early in Mancini's career and he still has not found his trademark French horn and strings combination. He is still writing in a big band style. This film is fast, light and fun, and movie musical fans looking for some good, obscure songs will be delighted with it.

Silence of the lakes

The whole production team can be proud of its work as "Morsiusseppele" comes out to be very colorful piece of romantic melodrama. Specially Hannu Leminen proves finally his value as one of classic directors in Suomi Filmi.

The script is very thin and blight but the director has pulled the very best out of the intensive scenes and the actors are also at their greatest top.

Some takes in the middle of the movie capture the fading summer so beautifully that the mind can't help flying straight to the open fields and silent lakes.
